Last weekend we went to Morden Hall Park Country Show.
The term ‘country show’ is used as a suggestion that aspects of the countryside will be bought to you in an urban environment. This particular event was appalling. A family ticket cost £12 plus £2 parking. The country aspects were limited to a select few animals, some miniature traction engines and the only decent stall there, a wood carver. The rest of the show consisted of a mixture of fair ground rides, food stalls with serious ideas above their station and a selection of retailers that wouldn’t seem out of place at a car boot sale. All this for £14.
It got me thinking as we walked back to the car in the pouring rain that we’ve become numb to what it is we really want from an event like this and we simply except what’s offered to us and pay through the nose for it. We have let our standards drop, a few crappy rides, some £1.99 chips and a stall selling beads is what we’ve come to expect and we never question how any of this fits into the concept of a country show.
I have decided to avoid such events unless they are actually in the countryside and within walking distance of a good pub.
